There Will Be Blood

In 2007, Paul Thomas Anderson created an epic American film that reflected the thrive for wealth in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Throughout the film, the protagonist, Daniel and the antagonist, Eli, go head to head constantly, until a reunion that ends with blood. We see in the first fifteen minutes of the film, where there is no dialogue, what Daniel is striving for; money. He is so corrupted by greed and power, that his own anger, turns him into a madman. Daniel came to Eastern California to do business, however he only did business with the people that cooperated and agreed with his ideas. When Daniel arrived in California, him and Eli instantly grew a small hatred for each other. It started at the dinner table when Daniel and Eli's father were trying to make a deal about the land and ended years later, when Daniel killed Eli. Daniel looked right past Eli's fake personality, even though the town thought he was an angel sent from above.

The final scene, also known as the "milkshake" scene, gave a full conclusion of what has been a lifelong battle between the protagonist and the antagonist. Eli, the antagonist, finally gave in and confessed to his true personality. Daniel did everything in his power, to finally make Eli give in and agree that he has been lying all of this time about who he really is. In this scene the tension builds up after each short conversation and ends in horror. This showed the corruption between the two characters.

  1. I completely agree with you and everything that you are saying here. Actually my post is oddly similar to my post. I think the tension between the Eli and Daniel has to with power and the fight for power. Daniel is constantly trying to prove that he is much better than everyone else and sometimes that he is better than God. The Milkshake scene is the final feud between the two. Daniel end with "i'm done" because he has finally proved himself

  2. As Mr. Bauks just said, there could be multiple meanings with the last words "I'm finished." I believe that they mean that he is done with Eli. This entire movie has been about the fight and the tension between Eli. First Daniel was the first to attack Eli when he slaps him into the mud. Then Eli retaliates in the church and pretty much embarrasses Daniel in front of everyone in the church. Finally Daniel gets his revenge by killing Eli. He is finished with his fight.

  3. Personally I found the development of Daniels character rather interesting. I liked how the film kept track of the dates and was able to slowly show the development of Daniels character from a loving father and businessman, into the power hungry maniac he became. I too wrote about the development of Daniels character since I believed it was the most interesting aspect of the film. I think it is an interesting idea that Eli played the antagonist of the film. He is made out to be such a good kind hearted person but at the end of the film we really do see Eli as he truly is. A phony corropted individual.
