I thought this
movie had very interesting hints and foreshadowing techniques. For example, in
the beginning of the movie, I thought "Tony” was foreshadowing Danny
becoming corrupted and him repeatedly saying, "redrum"
was foreshadowing for him murdering someone later in the movie. But later it is
revealed, I believe, that it was a warning for Wendy that Jack will be
corrupted soon and will not only murder Hallorann, but also go after him and
Wendy and try to kill them. If Danny didn't have that warning, they
might have not survived. I feel as though this movie was very dream like,
especially all the ghost scenes. At the very end when a picture of Jack is
shown in a group photo dated July 4th, 1921, I feel as though this revealed
that this is a ghost story, and that he was in fact a ghost. I noticed that
there were mirrors in a lot of the ghost scenes, particularly with Jack. I
think this was because ghosts can't be seen in mirrors. I think the
several red, white, and blue references were also are foreshadowing to the
photo of Jack at the party on Independence Day.
A very revealing
chat between Wendy and the doctor ensues, in which it's revealed that Jack
dislocated Danny's shoulder when he returned home drunk after a drinking binge.
This is briefly touched upon later when Wendy fears Jack has hurt Danny again
after his visit to Room 237. The chat with the doctor significantly
reveals that Jack quit drinking alcohol after the incident five months before,
which adds extra dramatic weight to his later anger-fuelled decision to have a
drink 'in return for his soul' from Lloyd the ghostly bartender in the Gold Room.
Additionally, in the bar scene Jack toasted to "five miserable months on
the wagon and all the irreparable harm that it's caused me". I feel as
though the scene when Wendy was talking to the doctor not only foreshadowed us
seeing Jack go insane and being violent, but also foreshadowed to him drinking
later in the movie.
