There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood shows a lot of character development. As the movie starts out, Daniel is portrayed as a harder working man who will go to desperate measures to move up the social ladder. He's a team player and a kind, quiet man. He takes H.W under his wings when his father dies and even calls him his son. He tries to protect Eli's little sister when H.W tells him she gets beaten by her father. It seems as though all his acts are out of the goodness of his heart. But, once H.W gets injured, Daniels character changes completely. He then is portrayed as a greedy, cold - hearted man. He feels no guilt in killing two other men and he hurts H.W more than he helps. Daniel confesses to H.W and the audience that he is not his biological son and he took care of him for business purposes only. He needed "a cute face" by his side in order to get what he wanted. At the beginning of the movie, you feel almost proud of all the progress Daniel has made. From digging holes in the middle of deserts (crawling out of hell) to working for an oil company; he has come along way and his hard work shows. You're almost happy that he has moved up the social ladder and is very successful. But, as the movie goes on, you start to grow a hate for him. You hate his greed, his bitterness, and his bluntness. Daniel has one of the biggest character changes I have ever seen.

  1. I agree with you when you say that Daniel's character has changed, however I think his emotions (whether its angry, sad, happy) always shine throughout. Even though Daniel has a dry sense of humor, you can still tell he does the things he does because he cares and has drive. He has passion throughout the film and never acts like he just doesn't care, even when he says what he says to H.W. Obviously he doesn't mean it, he wouldn't have raised him if he thought that way. He's just hurt and wants to have H.W around. Most, if not all, of Daniel's actions are driven by some type of emotion.
