Even though I found the plot of this movie complex and somewhat confusing, I found the way several scenes were shot very interesting. In the very beginning of the movie, there was a very interesting show where the camera was in the middle of the train tracks while seeing a car drive closer along side the tracks. I felt as though this was filmed this way to give a more scenic view of the setting.
One scene I thought was interesting was the famous "Milkshake Scene," where Eli and Daniel are having what is to be there final confrontation, and is where Daniel kills Eli. The scene takes place in Daniel's at-home bowling alley and Daniel has Eli admit his false prophecies and hypocrisies. What I thought was interesting was the use of focusing. When Eli's false prophecies and hypocrisies finally come arise, him and the bench behind him are focused, but the lighting and walls behind him are blurred. This was also the case when Daniel was revealing his true purpose. Even thought the framing nor lighting was nothing to be applauded, the performance of both actors was great. There was a shot that was almost two minutes long, no cuts, but yet was still able to engage viewers just through the chemistry of the two characters. I feel as though in most movies a lot of actors rely on cinematic techniques to back up their performance, but I believe as though that was not the case for Paul Dano and Daniel Day Lewis when performing this scene.
I agree. Sometimes people can forget how skilled people like Daniel Day Lewis really are. He stays completely on point and in character throughout the film, and can go for long takes. I was completely absorbed into the movie from the start, but the scene between Daniel and Eli at the end made me completely forget I was watching a movie. I was simply watching the slightly comical, yet sinister and complex relationship and interactions between two very powerful figures. I was watching a man's lifelong frustrations and anger boil into intense hatred, leading up to what seemed inevitable from the start. After all, the movie is titled There Will Be Blood.
