Forbes There Will Be Blood

At the end of the roller coaster of a film known as There Will Be Blood, Daniel Plainview announces, "I'm finished!"  I think that this is a fantastic finishing line, especially since it symbolizes a variety of different themes and has several different meanings (and in my opinion will become a classic line if it has not already).  With Daniel's success has also come great unhappiness.  His son is no longer able to act as his partner in the business, due to his disabilities caused by the oil explosion.  His hatred of people increases even more, somewhat due to his interaction with the people from Standard Oil ("You don't tell me how to raise my family!) and with Henry, but mainly because of Eli.  Eli's devoutness greatly bothers Daniel, who is not a religious man, and his demands for money to fund the church also aggravate him.  Daniel also becomes a heavy drinker, as we first see at the restaurant where he sees the men from Standard again, and in the scene where he is basically passed out on the floor of his bowling alley.  When he says the line, "I'm finished!", it in a way symbolizes the culmination of all his frustrations and unhappiness he has experienced throughout his life.  In a more literal way, he also means that he is "finished," as in he will surely not get away with killing Eli.

  1. Good post. I love the ending of this film as much as I love the beginning (the 15 mins of no dialogue followed by Daniel's long "pitch" monologue). Not only do i appreciate and enjoy the "milkshake" scene and the "death-by-bowling-pin," but Daniel's final words, "I'm finished," presumably with his meal? his guest? his life? his mission on earth as a hell spawn sent to wreak havoc on mortal sinners? I dunno. But the abrupt ending and his final words seem perfectly appropriate.
