Character
Development: There Will Be Blood
Throughout
the movie, Daniel Plainsiville’s character progresses in a variety of ways. He
becomes, bitter, violent, and increasingly deprived of his sanity. The movie starts out with a soft-spoken,
“family oriented”, Daniel. He looks out for H.W., he is relatively kind,
laidback, and decent. Once the movie picks up and Eli is introduced, Daniel
starts to become sassy and blatantly driven by money and image as the movie
picks up, death is a setback, a broken leg won’t stop him from selling silver,
H.W. becoming deaf is just a minor inconvenience. When H.W. gets in the way of
his money making, he just sends him away. His changes become more apparent
through his interactions with Eli. In one scene he goes so far as to smack him
around and rub him in the mud all the while mocking him for his belief in God.
The end of Daniel’s sanity is marked at the end of the movie as he delivers a
fatal beating with a bowling pin.
